Why You Should Eat More Salt in the Summer

It has been used throughout human history as a purifier of meats, food in general and the human body. In the human body, it purifies the blood stream and is literally an “enabler” of life. Without it, humans cannot exist.
During the summer months, our bodies require more salt because of the excess loss due to perspiration, increased urination and an overall increase in activity. Metabolic rate is increased; toxic components are more prevalent.

Salt, along with water, detoxifies these end products of metabolism. Salts are minerals that have an extra electrical charge.

These small electrical charges comprise our electrolyte system, which is our total energy source. This is why salt is so critically managed by the body. If your salt levels go too low, you faint. If they go lower still, you die. The first thing given in emergency rooms for fainting or exhaustion is a saline drip. Your salts/electrolyte pool have to be re-established if you are going to continue to live.

There are many types of salts. Generally, the best type of salt is fully mineralized land or sea salt. Though sea salt carries more minerals than land ( 80+ vs. 50+), either is sufficient to re-salinate and re-mineralize one’s tissues. Avoid, however, table salt. It has been through a refining process in which many of the minerals have been removed and only two are left: sodium and chloride. These two minerals are acidic and shouldn’t be taking regularly.

The minimum daily requirement for salt is one teaspoon of land or sea salt, taken throughout the day on food. You can also put a pinch to a half teaspoon in a glass of water or on your hand to be drunk or licked.

You can never get too much salt.

If you take in too much at once you’ll create a hypertonic condition in your bowel, which instantly causes elimination or diarrhea. In fact, magnesium salts (e.g. Milk of Magnesia) are taken for their laxative effects. Secondly, salts, like everything else in the body, are tightly regulated. Salt is regulated by the pituitary gland. Any excess salt is easily lost through perspiration, urination and defecation. Even the tearing process utilizes a tremendous amount of salt.

There is no way to over-salt as there is a constant flux of salt in and out of the body.
